WoW Forever Professions Guide: Choosing Your First Two Skills
Understand primary and secondary professions, plan your first two skills and learn how Camping fits into Blizzard’s announced WoW Forever systems.
Choosing WoW Forever professions is easier when you start with the way you want to play. Do you enjoy gathering while traveling, making useful items for friends or planning production around materials you can obtain? Those questions are more useful than an unsupported claim that one profession will make everyone rich.
Pre-launch guide, checked October 30, 2026. The profession and Camping facts below come from Blizzard's announcements. Recommendations about choosing and budgeting are G2U's planning advice, not measured launch-economy results.
How many professions can you learn?
Blizzard confirms two primary profession slots. The primary choices are Mining, Herbalism, Skinning, Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring. Cooking, Fishing and First Aid are secondary professions: learning them does not require giving up one of those two primary slots. Official profession overview.
That distinction matters when planning a character or configuring a service. Two different primary selections are a separate decision from adding secondary skills. Do not count Cooking as one of your two primary choices.
Start with the activities you enjoy
Use your likely routine to narrow the list before researching individual recipes. The following comparison is a practical decision aid, not a ranking of profit, combat power or leveling speed.
| Your preferred activity | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Explore and collect along the way | Gathering options and the resources accessible during your normal travel. |
| Make equipment or supplies | Current crafting recipes, material requirements and items your character or group can use. |
| Support a regular group | Profession coverage among friends and useful contributions you can provide. |
| Spend less time managing inventory | How much collecting, storage and market activity you are willing to maintain. |
For example, a player who dislikes market research should not choose a plan that depends on buying ingredients and repeatedly reselling crafted items. A gatherer who enjoys exploring may prefer a routine that works alongside questing instead of a long detour copied from an old map.
Compare recipes before committing a budget
Inspect what the current profession interface and trainers actually offer. Write down one useful target, the materials it needs and how you expect to obtain them. Keep the first plan small enough to change when you learn something new.
Avoid buying enough materials for an entire leveling plan before checking its assumptions. A recipe list from another version may look familiar without matching Forever's requirements. Even a correct material list does not establish the price those materials will have in your region and ruleset.
Count gathered materials as resources with an alternative use. If you could sell them or save them for another recipe, using them in a craft still has a cost. Our gold preparation guide explains how to compare inputs, expenses and actual sales without relying on invented income targets.
What Camping adds to professions
Blizzard describes Camping as a shared campsite system built around a campfire, with contributions from different professions. Its profession overview describes first campsite items at profession skill 20 and explains that a Basic Campfire supports three contributed features, with one contribution per player. Camping and profession features.
The official Deep Dive also describes profession workspaces, group utility and camp improvements connected to Cooking. Camping benefits are designed around stopping together and preparing for the next part of a journey. Blizzard's Deep Dive recap.
The practical implication is that your profession choice can have value to a group beyond items you personally equip. Ask friends what they intend to contribute. A coordinated group may find broader coverage more useful than everyone independently following the same recommendation.
These announcements do not establish a universal best pairing, a guaranteed profit or a requirement to have a fully leveled profession before enjoying the game.
Cooking, Fishing and First Aid are separate choices
Because secondary skills do not consume primary slots, you can consider them independently. Decide whether you want to work on them during normal play or make them a separate project later.
If you are choosing paid profession options, read the saved option names carefully. The target skill, included materials, prerequisites and expected completion conditions should be explicit. An option named "Cooking 300" should describe that target in its own product conditions; it should not be inferred from the title of a different profession option.
Keep character leveling and profession progress separate in your expectations. Reaching a desired character level does not by itself explain what profession work is included.
A practical plan for your first two professions
- Choose a purpose. Name one activity or group contribution you want each profession to support.
- Inspect the current requirements. Check trainers, available recipes and prerequisites before spending.
- Make a small trial plan. Gather or purchase enough for a manageable next step rather than the entire journey.
- Review the result. Look at what you used, what remains and whether the profession fits your routine.
- Expand deliberately. Commit more resources only when you understand the next goal.
Keep notes about costs and experience so that you can distinguish a repeatable routine from a lucky result. Your own observations are especially useful early in a new game economy.
What to check before ordering profession leveling
Confirm the selected profession, starting skill, target skill, character requirements and whether materials are included. Ask how the work is performed and whether the character must meet any access requirements beforehand.
If you order two primary professions, choose different skills and confirm the character has the appropriate slots. Treat Cooking, Fishing and First Aid as additional selections rather than substitutes for a primary slot.
Also check timing. A character-level estimate is not automatically a profession-leveling estimate. If the product does not state a time for the selected profession work, ask support instead of assuming it is included in the character estimate.

Frequently asked questions
How many primary professions can I choose?
Blizzard lists two primary profession slots. Pick two different primary skills that fit your goals and the character's available slots.
Do Cooking, Fishing and First Aid use primary slots?
No. Blizzard lists them as secondary professions, so they can be considered separately from your primary choices.
Which profession is best for making gold?
This pre-launch guide does not claim a verified profit ranking. Compare recipes, material costs and actual sales in the game before treating a profession as a business plan.
Does a leveling-service time estimate include professions?
Only if the listing explicitly says so. Confirm the scope and timing of each selected profession rather than treating a character-level estimate as a promise for every extra.
